Biogas plants are usually located in rural areas and convert the produced biogas into electricity on site. However, the produced heat can rarely be used in sparsely populated areas. The possible overall efficiency of these plants is therefore often less than 50 %.
Biogas can be purified to natural gas quality by means of biogas upgrading technology.
With a carbon dioxide separation process pure biomethane is generated out of the biogas gas mixture.
This is fed into the public natural gas grid whilst meeting strict quality requirements and it is transported to the place of best consumption. There the purified biogas can be used as flexibly as natural gas.
The upgrading of biogas can be reasonable especially for biogas plants which have no heat distribution from their CHP. To guarantee the transport of the biomethane, a natural gas grid should be available nearby.
